Don’t Let It Go Out

If you’ve ever climbed out of a cold tent early in the morning and found your fire still hot enough with a few embers to re-light, you know how urgent it is to get some fuel on it and get it burning again.  The same goes for the things you forgot you were passionate about.

Life can derail your focus or take you away from the lifestyle you enjoyed. Maybe it’s a new partner, kids or simply a significant life event.

There will be no whining here, just an acknowledgement that the paths we run in this life continue to branch-off and we find ourselves having to stop, look around and wonder if we should have made a different turn.

This week my bestie surprised me with tickets to the 2025 Paddling Film Festival portion of the CMFF as a date night out. I have been out of the mountain community for years now but watching some paddling films couldn’t be so bad and it’s a night out, right?

Running into some old acquaintances and sitting back in the old Globe Theater just flooded me with the “good ol’ days” but by the time we finished the last film, the stoke was clearly coming back.

I know it. But I need to be reminded often that exposure to the mountains and adventure lifestyle fans the flame that burns inside me. That flame confirmed my move to Alberta in 2001, got me through hard emotional times and led me to building relationships with some of my heroes and making good friends for life. The more time I spend outside with cool people doing cool things, the more I grow closer to who I really am and the more meaningful my work becomes.

The stoke is there. It’s time to throw some more fuel on the fire.
