There’s something about the first weeks of a new year that feels like standing at the trailhead before sunrise—quiet, full of potential, and waiting for you to take the first step. As an adventure lifestyle photographer, I’ve learned that the habits we build behind the scenes shape the stories we get to tell out in the wild.
This year, I’m focusing on habits that create more space for exploration. Simple things, like charging batteries the night before instead of scrambling at 5 a.m., or keeping my pack dialed so I can head out the door the moment the light turns interesting. I’m carving out time to scout new locations, revisit overlooked trails, and chase weather instead of waiting for perfect conditions.
But the biggest habit shift is choosing presence over perfection. The best images rarely come from rigid plans—they come from being open, curious, and willing to follow the unexpected. So I’m building habits that keep me nimble: daily movement, intentional rest, and a commitment to carrying my camera even on “ordinary” days.
A new year doesn’t need a reinvention. Just a few small habits that help us show up—ready for whatever adventure unfolds next
