What I Do

What I Do

"The photographer is responsible for everything that appears in an image, whether it should be there or not."

Editorial Portraiture

This is all about capturing the essence of a person in an image. It’s not just about taking a pretty picture; it’s about telling a story and creating a portrait that has real meaning. The editorial portrait clients I work with are generally part of a written article or publication (magazine) and involved in some sporting or adventure lifestyle. An editor or writer will contact me with a story or brief to go with the person they want covered. It is my job to connect with that person, quickly get a sense of who they are and what the story is and produce a portrait that speaks on its own. When done right, a good editorial portrait will not only give some insight on a subjects’ personality and vocation, but also pertain to the use and placement of the portrait.

Commercial Photography

This service involves producing images or illustrations that convey an idea or story directed at some kind of end-user or target market. This can be images of a company in action at a building site or simply a product in use in the right environment. When working with commercial clients I prefer to spend the time needed to learn about the use of the required images but also the ideas they need represented. The more I know and understand about their ideas and placements, the closer I can get to producing the original vision. Examples include action and product photography marketing a brand and services, illustrating a business’ operations, or building a catalogue.

Private

Private client work is made up mostly by portraits and “lifestyle” portraits that authentically represent an important moment in someone’s life. Whether it is a family portrait, or an action shot of someone on their horse, a good portrait is a celebration of who a person was, where they were in time. It’s fun to talk about the “good old days” but to have that picture, the personality, the place and the character in an image that tells a story all at once, is like reliving that moment every time you see it. Clients who are involved with professional sports, serious hobbies or adventure lifestyles have had me out to photograph them doing what they loved. You just can’t beat photographing and telling the stories of people who believe they have the best jobs and lifestyles in the world.
